Dell's 2709W 27-inch LCD

Dell just busted out a new member in its storied line of LCDs, the UltraSharp 2709W. The 27-inch LCD is Dell's followup to the 2707WFP, and features the same 1920 x 1200 resolution, 9-in-2 media card reader and 6ms response time, but bumps the contrast ratio to 3000:1 and goes for some new all-black stylings. Brightness is a mean 450 nits, but the real fun comes with ports: Dell squeezed just about everything known to man in here, including HDMI, DVI-D, VGA, component, composite, and DisplayPort. There's also a nice collection of USB ports, plus HDCP for good measure. With a three year warranty the display sells for $999, quite the steal compared to the 2707WFP's intro price of $1,400 last year.

Upcoming Samsung HDTVs to Feature Built-in Games

Samsung LCD TVs to run simple programs such as Sudoku

Samsung introduced at CES 2008 its new line of Series 6 and Series 7 LCD high-definition televisions. Besides the usual features of a 1080p resolution, 120Hz refresh rates and 4ms response times, Samsung was proud to point out that its full line (LN40A650T, LN46A650T, LN52A650T, LN40A750T, LN46A750T, and LN52A750T) will feature a “Touch of Color” design that adds a hint of amber color naturally blended into Samsung's piano black bezel frame.

With all the excitement of a colored bezel, Samsung may have forgotten to mention in its press release that its upcoming high-end LCD HDTVs will come packed with video games. Several models will come with content preloaded into the set’s built-in flash memory, some of which will be games.

Tim Baxter, executive vice president of Samsung, told the AP that simple games such as Sudoku will be bundled with televisions. Other programs potentially preloaded on the TV include artwork (for use as a digital picture frame), screensavers, fitness programs and recipes.

"If you think about the TV experience, it has historically been a lean-back experience," Baxter said, contrasting it to the "lean forward" experience of the PC. "We think there are opportunities to bring very relevant parts of that experience into the living room."

Users will also be able to add new programs and artwork by transferring them from the PC to a flash drive, which can interface with the set’s USB slot.

Furthermore, the TV’s Ethernet port can also pave the way for more content options, including news, weather, sports and stocks information supplied by USA Today in a picture-in-picture window.

Samsung’s Series 6 LCD HDTVs will be available starting this March, with the Series 7 hitting in May.

Dell 30-inch 3008WFP LCD

Dell 330WFP DisplayPort equipped LCD hits Dell New Zealand website Gamers know that the big 30-inch displays seem good while gaming at resolutions of 2560 x 1600, assuming you have the picture muscle to have playable chassis rates.

There are several competitors in the 30-inch exhibit stadium and many of them are gearing upward to place DisplayPort interfaces on their latest offerings. Dell New Zealand has an original 30-inch exhibit on its website that offers a plethora of connectivity options. The 30-inch 2560 x 1600 settlement exhibit has a couple of DVI-D ports, something that Dell's previously accessible 30-inch exhibit sorely lacked. Other input options include a HDMI port, DisplayPort, analogue VGA, composite picture, part picture and S-video connectors.

The Dell New Zealand site lists the 3008WFP’s response time at 8ms and quotes 178-degree viewing angles. Brightness for the monitor is 370cd/m2 and the dynamic contrast ratio is 3000:1. The stand has tilt, swivel, and is height adjustable. Pricing for the 3008WFP on the New Zealand Dell site is NZ$2,699 delivered, equating to about $2,040 USD.

Dell plans to announce its 3008WFP display at the Consumer Electronics Show on January 7, 2008 in Las Vegas.

Before making use of the DisplayPort on the Dell 3008WFP a DisplayPort equipped video card is required. DailyTech reported recently that AMD would have DisplayPort equipped video cards on the market in early 2008. In October, Gateway announced its first 30-inch display called the XHD3000, which lacks the DisplayPort input.

Samsung announced its 30-inch display equipped with a DisplayPort input in July of 2007.
