Micron Launches New Lineup of 1.8", 2.5" SSDs

Samsung introduced a new lineup of SATA II drives in 1.8" and 2.5" form-factors. Samsung's new drives promise sequential write speeds of 100MB/sec and sequential reads of 120MB/sec.

Today, it's Micron's turn to shine with its RealSSD solid-state drives. Micron says that its new drives will be available in both 1.8" and 2.5" form-factors and will have a native-SATA II interface -- no SATA bridge chip will be needed for the drives.

Unfortunately, Micron made no mention of the performance figures for its RealSSDs. Most manufacturers like to throw out read/write speeds for their SSDs – often times, before mass production even begins -- but Micron's hesitance to release performance figures could indicate that they aren't quite up to par with solutions from Samsung, SanDisk, Adtron and Mtron.

"SSDs are becoming the new storage medium, fundamentally altering the way data is stored," said Micron VP Dean Klein. "The storage market is ripe for innovation, and it’s an opportunity Micron is embracing given our expertise in NAND. We know how to manage NAND flash to work best with controllers, allowing us to develop an optimized SSD solution for every application."

Micron's RealSSD lineup will be available in both 32GB and 64GB varieties. The drives are currently sampling and production-spec hardware should be available during the first quarter of 2008.

Dell Launches Precision T5400, T7400 Workstations

Dell is ushering a new generation of workstations today based around Intel's new 45 nanometer Xeon processors. The new Precision T5400 and T7400 aim to continue Dell's eight-year-long winning streak with its Precision family.

All configurations of the T5400 and T7400 will come equipped with quad-core 5200 and 5400 series Xeon processors. The fastest configurations will feature a 3.2GHz processor running on a 1600MHz front-side bus.

Beginning in January, Dell will also make available dual-core configurations for customers that don't take advantage of highly multi-threaded applications and instead rely on raw speed. For those customers, high-end dual core solutions will be offered in speeds up to 3.4GHz.

The new Precision workstations feature dual-processor sockets and dual PCI Express 2.0 x16 graphics slots for high-powered graphics solutions. The T5400 offers up to a 1333MHz FSB while the T7400 ups the ante to 1600MHz.

In addition, the T7400 will also be available with 16 memory slots at a later date. The 16 memory slots coupled with 8GB DIMMs -- which Dell is currently working with memory manufacturers to develop and release -- will give the T7400 a maximum memory capacity of 128GB.

"Workstation customers rely on specialized applications and demand maximum performance from their systems," said Dell Precision workstation worldwide marketing director Antonio Julio. "These systems have some of the fastest Intel processors, high-end OpenGL graphics and massive scalability and memory capacities."

Dell is fully committed to energy efficiency with its new T5400 and T7400 and thus has given both power supplies which are 80 percent efficient. Likewise, both models also qualify for the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star Standard 4.0 certification.

Customers that are looking for quieter machines will also be glad to hear that Dell has reduced noise levels on the two workstations by 33 percent. Dell achieved this feat by using larger, slower-moving cooling fans and by rearranging critical components to aide in air flow management.

The new Precision T5400 and T7400 are available to order now from Dell at a price of $1,589 and $1,839 respectively. Systems will begin shipping later this week.

Dell Rolls Out XPS m1530 Notebook

It looks as though Dell has even more up its sleeve today after the announcement of the Dell Precision T5400 and T7400. Next up to bat for Dell is the XPS m1530 notebook.

The 15.4" XPS m1530 is the bigger brother to the XPS m1330 which sports a 13.3" display. Processor options for the new notebook range from a 1.5GHz Core 2 Duo T5250 on up to a 2.6GHz Core 2 Duo T7800 processor. As with most new notebooks today, the XPS m1530 supports up to 4GB of DDR2 memory.

Customers can choose from either a 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS or GeForce 8600M GT for graphics duties while storage options are plentiful -- up to 200GB (7200 RPM), 300GB (5400 RPM) or 64GB (SSD) are supported. Other storage options include either a slot-loading dual-layer DVD burner or a slot-loading Blu-ray drive.

Other niceties include three USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI output, Firewire, an 8-in-1 media reader, an ExpressCard slot and integrated 2.0MP camera. Options include an Intel 802.11n wireless card, Dell Wireless 5520 HSDPA, Dell Wireless 5720 EVDO and Bluetooth 2.0.

The XPS m1530 measures 14.06" x 10.34" x 1.28" and weighs 5.78 pounds with the standard 6-cell 56WHr battery -- a 9-cell 85WHr battery is optional.

Unfortunately for potential customers, Dell has skimped on the display as it is only available with a 1280x800 (WXGA) screen resolution -- a 1440x900 option would have been nice. In addition, Dell doesn't even give users the option of upgrading to LED backlighting (as seen on the XPS m1330).

The lack of LED backlighting shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, however, as Dell ran into shortage problems with LED-backlit displays on the m1330 and supplying larger 15.4" panels could have been problematic for the company. Hopefully, Dell can get the kinks works out in the future.

Dell's new XPS m1330 is available now at a starting price of $999. Customers can choose Windows Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate for the operating system while Alpine White, Tuxedo Black and Crimson Red are your colors of choice for the notebook itself.

Eizo Announces 24-inch LCD for Colorblind Users

For most computer users who spend many hours working on a computer each day, a large screen LCD display is very welcome. However, for some users -- particularly those who are colorblind -- working on a computer can be very difficult.

According to the Color Universal Design Organization in the U.S. and Europe one of every 10 to 12 males have color vision different from ordinary people and one of every 200 females does as well. Globally over 200 million people are believed to be colorblind.

For colorblind people the colors that they have the most difficulty recognizing are red, green and yellow along with other hues that are similar. The inability to distinguish between certain colors for colorblind users can make a typical large 30-inch display like the Gateway XHD3000 uncomfortable to use.

Gizmodo is reporting that Eizo has a new 24-inch LCD display called the FlexScan SX2461W-U that is aimed directly at users who are colorblind.

The SX2461W-U uses Color Universal Design technology that uses different color schemes and shapes to help colorblind users distinguish between different colors. The display has a pair of HDCP DVI ports that allows you to use one display for two computers and some USB ports as well. This display can be used by non-colorblind users as well with different profiles available.

The price for the display is $1,275, which is in line for a 24-inch Eizo display. The contrast ratio is 850:1 and the brightness is 300 CD/m2. The SX2461W-U should be available in December.

Waterproof and Fire-Safe HDD Case

If you are working with important information, it is obvious that you want it to remain intact. There are many accidents, which may result data loss; such as electricity cuts, accidental deletion, drive failure or external factors. The latter can be most disastrous, because in first two cases you have a chance to restore information as opposed to situations, when your HDD had gone down in flames or sunk. If you are worried only about that kind of situations, fatal to your information, then this ultra protected HDD case can be a good choice.

SentrySafe FIRE-SAFE/Waterproof case was designed by such geeky persons in mind. Sentry and Maxtor teamed up and created a tank-like safe that can sustain temperatures of up to 1500 F (815 C) for nearly 30 minutes – which is amazing. This HDD safe cames with OneTouch 4 Mini drive, with a plenty of backup/restore software. Drive is fully functional when in case, with an external USB cable that lets you connect it to your PC without removing it from its shell.

It is a pity that this drives are not RAID, so you are not secured from good old drive failures. This ultimate drive protection gadget will cost you 320 dollars for 160 GB version, and 260 for 80 GB. A bit high price, but doesn't the lost information cost higher?
